Six Cedar Catholic students competed in the Northeastern Chapter Mathcounts competition on Feb. 3, 2018 at Central Community College-Platte Campus. The contest was organized by the Nebraska Society of professional Engineers to recognize achievement in mathematics skills among junior high and middle school students. Those six students were team members: Parker Albers, Elena Paltz, Kurtis Kathol and Elizabeth Rokusek. Nash Albers and Jeremiah Polak competed as individuals.
Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since September. Approximately 75 students from 9 schools attending the chapter competition and were tested on such topics as probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials. The program consisted of individual, team and fast-paced written tests. Parker Albers finished third and Elena Paltz finished fourth overall. The Cedar Catholic team finished second to North Bend Central Jr/Sr High.
Cedar Catholic, coached by Patti Bailey, has been involved with Mathcounts for six years and have had teams and/or individuals represented at state for 3 out of the 6 years. This is a great way for students to improve their math skills, their critical thinking skills as well as various problem solving skills. The knowledge gained from this program is invaluable.
